Katerina Ikonomou was born in Tashkent (former USSR) by Greek parents. She received her first lessons in music, in her hometown, where she continued her studies until she graduated from the conservatory.

After her return to Greece with her family, she took part in the Maria Callas competition, in Athens, receiving a four year fellowship to study at the Academy of Music and Dance of Cologne, in Germany, as well as the possibility to participate in masterclasses in Italy and the USA.

She made her debut with great success, singing the title role of the opera Salome by Richard Strauss, in Würzburg, Germany. Right after that, she received invitations to sing this role in a series of important theatres like the Metropolitan Opera of New York, the Zurich Opera, the Opéra Garnier in Paris, as well as the Spoleto Festival, in Italy and the Charleston Festival in South Carolina.

For her performance us Salome at the Spoleto Festival, under the button of Spyro Argiri, she was awarded unanimously the prize of Italian critics, Golden Pegasus, which has been awarded to artists like Luchino Visconti, Tomas Schippers, Maya Plisetskaya, Ingmar Bergman, Antonio Gades among others.

Other important moments in her career was the opening of the festival Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, in Florence, with the opera the invisible city of Kitezh by Rinskt Korsakov in 1990 and with the opera Jenufa by Leoš Janaček, in 1993; her appearance as Santuzza in the Cavaleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, for the 100th anniversary of the work, in Livorno, the composer's birthplace, this productions was published a CD; the world premiere of the opera Medea by Mikis Theodorakis, in 1991, at the Theatre Arriaga, in Bilbao, with Katerina Ikonomou on the title role, which was created for her voice; her debut at the Arena di Verona in 1993 with the Cavaleria Rusticana and her debut at the Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, 1994 with the Fiery Angel by Sergei Prokofiev under the button of Riccardo Chailly.

Katerina Ikonomou has sang in many important theatres in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Greece, U.S.A., Brazil under conductors like James Levine, Bruno Bartoletti, Semyon Bykhov, Richardo Chailly, Myung Wung Chung, Valery Gergiev, Gustav Kuhn, Kent Nagano, Manos Hatzidakis, Dimitris Karides, Spyro Argiri, Loukas Karitinos, Alkis Baltas, Miltos Logiades.

She has collaborated directors like Pier Luigi Pizzi, Liliana Cavani, Gabriele Lavia, Giancarlo Cobelli, Ulderico Manani, Jorge Lavelli, Gunter Kramer, Pet Halmen, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Spyro Evaggelato among others.

Η Κατερίνα Οικονόμου γεννήθηκε στην Τασκένδη (πρώην ΕΣΣΔ) από Έλληνες γονείς. Έλαβε τα πρώτα της μαθήματα στη μουσική στη γενέτειρά της, όπου συνέχισε στο Ωδείο της ίδιας πόλης μέχρι την αποφοίτηση της.

Μετά την επιστροφή της στην Ελλάδα με την οικογένεια της, έλαβε μέρος στο διαγωνισμό Μαρία Κάλλας, στην Αθήνα, απο όπου κέρδισε μια τετραετή υποτροφία που της επέτρεψε να σπουδάσει για τέσσερα χρόνια στη Ακαδημία Μουσικής και Χορού της Κολωνίας στη Γερμανία καθώς και τη δυνατότητα να παρακολουθήσει masterclasses στην Ιταλία και τις ΗΠΑ.

Έκανε το ντεμπούτο της με μεγάλη επιτυχία, με τον ρόλο τίτλου στην όπερα Salome του Richard Strauss, στο Würzburg της Γερμανίας. Μετά από αυτό αμέσως έλαβε προσκλήσεις για να τραγουδήσει αυτό το ρόλο σε μια σειρά απο σημαντικά θέατρα, όπως η Όπερα της Ζυρίχης, η Opéra Garnier του Παρισιού, στη Μητροπολική Όπερα της Νέας Υόρκης καθώς στα φεστιβάλ του Σπολέτο στην Ιταλία και του Charleston στη Νότια Καρολίνα.

Για την ερμηνεία της ως Salome στο φεστιβάλ του Σπολέτο, υπο τη διεύθυνση του Σπύρου Αργύρη, της απονεμήθηκε ομόφωνα το βραβείο των Ιταλών κριτικών Χρυσός Πήγασος, βραβείο που έχει απονεμηθεί σε καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Luchino Visconti, ο Tomas Schippers, η Maya Plisetskaya, ο Ingmar Bergman, ο Antonio Gades κ.α.

Άλλες σημαντικές στιγμές στην καρίερα της ήταν, το άνοιγμα το φεστιβάλ Maggio Musicale Fiorentino στη Φλωρεντία, με την όπερα Ο μύθος της αόρατης πόλης του Kitesh του Rimsky Korsakov, το 1990 και με την όπερα Jenufa του Leoš Janáček, το 1993.
